Lockdown for many artists provides
opportunities to explore new work and find some
extra time to be creative at home.
Some of our members have been doing
exactly that.
Below is a taste of what they have been doing ....

Eleanor Kercher found time to get creative with her Greenwoodwork...she found a silver lining during lockdown...

Had we not been suffering a global pandemic, Made in Ross members would have been preparing feverishly for an exhibition at Goodrich Castle as part of the Gilpin 2020 festival.
However, with the postponement, we have been given much more time to prepare some stunning work for next year....every cloud.

I have been working on modern versions of Welsh stick chairs.
These are solid-seated chairs which would have been made by the ordinary folk around Goodrich way back to the 12th century.  They were not made by specialist chair makers: a few hand tools and basic carpentry skills were all that was needed.  There would have been no turning or steam bending – techniques frequently now used in the modern stick chair and its refined successor, the Windsor chair.

modern twist finished chairs
I’ve tried to keep some of the features of traditional stick chairs, particularly the width and plainness of the seat  and the legs being set further into the seat and at a steeper angle. Other than that, I’ve used the wood I had to hand and my imagination.  They are both copies of existing chairs I have found online: a three-legged 18th century chair:

Waste not......Want not.....
Some of our members use recycled materials or left overs to make entire pieces of work or as a contribution to projects they are working on. Examples of the materials used range from coloured glass bottles, wool, fabric scraps, wood from unwanted furniture, broken crockery and upcyclable fabric to select leaves from trees or plants and skins from vegetables. These materials are often seen as scrap but with some ingenious creative ideas from some of the artists at Made in Ross they are being cleverly made into some of the following....
Picture
Frances Warren - Recycled Glass and Bottles
Picture
Rosie Callinan - Upcycling fabrics to make mounted animal heads
Picture
Eleanor Kercher - upcycled wood from unwanted school furniture
Picture
Chris Champness - Reusable wool for many knitted items including these minis
Picture
Rosie Callinan - Reuse of broken crockery to make mosaics
Picture
Sue White - Eco Dye using onion skins, leaves from eucalyptus and select plants and trees
Should any members of the public have any of the above materials as free unwanted items.....all is most welcome.
Please feel free to contact the artist via their gallery page or direct to the gallery.
Each of the items shown above has a link to the artist members page where their email contact form can be found.
