Guest Artist 2nd - 29th May 2022 - Robbie Robertson

Robbie took up painting in 2010 after a long career as a steam engineer during which he travelled extensively around the world. Using mainly oil paints, his favourite subjects are landscapes, skies and clouds especially where there is interesting lightplay. The adaptability of oils means that it is possible to experiment and, as often happens, change and adapt a work to capture the magic of the moment. He lives near Ross and so has an abundance of wonderful subject matter on his doorstep.

Robbie’s other love is gliding and he has been flying and instructing in sailplanes for over 50 years in the UK and the French Alps. Usually, he flies out of the Black Mountains Gliding Club in Wales and his passion for the air provides unlimited subject matter as he soars high above the Welsh mountains and further afield. He has exhibited at the Mall Gallery in London and won awards for his work from the Guild of Aviation Artists.

Robbie will be exhibiting at the Market House from 2nd May thru to the 29th May

Guest Artist - Al Blethyn April 2nd - 29th 2022

Made in Ross are delighted to have
Al Blethyn as our Guest Artist for the month of April.
Al Blethyn's art veers quite markedly between genres. Landscapes to abstracts; skyscapes to still life and graphics to illustration. This is probably down to being trained and steeped in the world of graphics and advertising images for so long. Where once every brief required a different visual response, this same approach can now be detected in the sheer variety of his painting . His painting styles reflect personal observations and choices together with a long standing professional discipline.
Picture
Growing up in post-war London, he went through school days with a burning ambition; to be an artist. He took on stop gap jobs, but also had the foresight to enrol at the Harrow School of Art. Later, armed with their certificate and a thin portfolio, he persuaded British Rail in Euston to try him out as a Junior Designer. A few years down the line and he was attending The London College of Printing studying Graphics. By 1967, Al had quit British Rail and immersed himself fulltime in Typographic/Graphic Design at Watford College. He left there in 1969 with a Distinction and several diplomas from professional institutions.
As a freelancer, he had freedom to express himself professionally, whilst pursuing another audience with his paintings. This proved an ideal work environment for the next thirtyfive years. However, by 2010 it felt time to bring down the shutters on ABCreative.
At last, he could concentrate solely on painting without the distraction of running the consultancy.

Most of his output had been in gouache, inks and markers, with a small percentage in pastels. Gradually though, especially for landscapes and still life, pastels became the medium he naturally turned to. He found the size and weight of these short, stubby chalks had an affinity with markers, which he’d used everyday of his working life. When applying pastels, he liked the techniques involved when blending, cross hatching, smudging and building-up of colour. With a choice of differing pastels types, he could be subtle, controlled or as flamboyant as he wished, as the mood of the picture evolved. Pastels quickly became  comfortable and a hugely satisfying medium for Al.

He’s had several solo and joint exhibitions. And to this day, a nod of approval or an appreciative word from a ‘viewer’ makes it all worthwhile.

Peace Pole in Ross Community Gardens....

The Peace pole project was initailly organised by Tim Shelley the manager of the Haygrove Community Garden (www.haygrove.com)  Made in Ross is pleased to say that Tim has taken delivery of our contribution to this project.

Our peace pole was decorated over the Spring and Summer when the gallery was closed, and finished off when we re-opened by a small team of artists from the Made in Ross collective, Jackie Poulter,  Louise Pilditch, Eleanor Kercher, Annabel Neilson and Frances Warren.
Louise researched the folk lore and images
which were integrated onto the pole with words of peace. All together the poles were to display 100 languages. Of those 100 we were allocated Chinese, Russian Filipino  and  Ruandi to create designs for.
As we are based in Ross we decided to include a number of hedgehogs in the design. The pole is topped off with a cheerful cap of bouncing hedgehogs created by Eleanor Kercher, a green woodworker member.

From the basic wood pole to a finished decorated Peace Pole.

Guest Artists Life As We See It - November 2019

LIFE AS WE SEE IT - IN THE CENTRE OF ROSS-ON-WYE

For the first time ever an exhibition of portraits and paintings of the human form will be on show at Made in Ross in the Market House, Ross-on-Wye starting next Sunday alongside the beautiful and varied work of the Made in Ross artist’s cooperative.

The exhibition will showcase work by members of a Life Class tutored by Angela Palmer at Brockweir in the Wye Valley. The show is entitled “Life As We See It” and has been held annually for the past 20 years in various venues, most recently Taurus Crafts in Lydney.

This talented group of artists enjoy working by observation directly from a life model. The challenge which this presents makes this possibly the most difficult one an artist can attempt, but it can also be the most rewarding as something of the humanity and character of the sitter gives the work an   energy sometimes lacking in paintings done from photographs.

The artists use many different media to portray the human figure with techniques including painting in oils,  impressionistic mixed media work and exquisite pencil drawing.

There will also be some sculpture on show made by clay modelling from life, in short something for everyone.

The exhibition will be held at Made in Ross upstairs in the Market House in the centre of Ross-on-Wye. It begins on Sunday 27th October and continues until Saturday 9th November and is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free and most of the work will be for sale. Made in Ross Gallery is accessible from street level via a lift.

Guest Artist - October 2019

Janice made her first quilt [4” squares on point] in 1968 in California USA but not because of Amercian influences: she states..."I was using up left-over dress-making materials!"

The seed was sown, and in the 1980s, whilst living in North Devon, she attended a 6 week patchwork course, making a sampler quilt.  After another time gap, Janice found herself living in Herefordshire and belonging to Archenfield Quilters. From this point forwards her experience and expertise have developed.

She enjoys hand quilting and rarely machine quilts.

More recently she has learnt to spin and weave and plans to develop these skills further.
